Coimbatore sports scene is getting one interesting update, and honestly, this one feels like good news for local players who usually struggle for proper spaces to train . A new kabaddi court is planned at Kumarasamy Lake, also known as Muthannankulam, and it is supposed to be built as per international standards.
And yes, cost is not small ah. Project is estimated at ₹1.8 crore, which means city is clearly trying to create proper dedicated space for kabaddi instead of treating it like side activity .
The court will come up on vacant land next to multi-sports turf that was recently developed at lake . Officials from Coimbatore Corporation said that turf was laid at cost of ₹60 lakh and is now ready for use .
But what stands out here is location also. Kumarasamy Lake is not just random open ground,it is one of nine water bodies rejuvenated under Smart Cities Mission . So this whole area is slowly being turned into mix of environment, recreation and public use .
Few key things in this project:
- Kabaddi court will be designed to international standards for better training.
- Project aims to encourage more youth participation in sports.
- It is part of lake rejuvenation work under Smart Cities Mission .
The rejuvenation work at Kumarasamy Lake began in 2021,and officials say it included removing encroachments and improving tank's storage capacity . That part matters because lake spaces in cities often get ignored, encroached or left dirty for years.
And now if same place becomes useful for young athletes, that is actually nice to see . Kabaddi has huge following in Tamil Nadu also, but many players still train in basic grounds without proper facilities.
At same time,₹1.8 crore project will naturally bring expectations . People will want to see whether court is maintained properly, whether local players actually get access, and whether competitions happen regularly or not .
For now,it sounds like Coimbatore Corporation wants to push stronger sporting culture around lake area . Good idea on paper, but real test will be how this space is used once excitement settles down…
