This Assam case is honestly disturbing because it is not just about smuggling animals,it is about endangered golden langurs being stuffed into sacks like some goods . And when one was found dead,it shows how cruel this whole trafficking chain can get .
On June 19,2026,nine individuals were arrested in Chirang district,Assam for alleged involvement in trafficking endangered golden langurs . These animals are protected under Wildlife (Protection) Act, 1972,so this is not small thing ah .
Among those arrested was Bangladeshi national,Mohammed Jamal ,who reportedly entered India just four days earlier on June 15 . That detail has made case even more serious because officials are now looking at possible cross-border links also .
And operation was carried out by Assam Police's Special Task Force (STF) along with local police . During raid, authorities recovered eight golden langurs, but sadly one was already dead . Reports say animals were being carried in two vehicles and had been kept in suffocating sacks, causing them considerable stress.
Few facts standing out in this case:
- Officials believe this group is linked to larger international wildlife trafficking syndicate.
- Golden langurs were captured from Ultapani area in Kokrajhar district.
- Vehicles used for smuggling were confiscated as part of investigation.
Kunjan Basumatary ,the Chirang Divisional Forest Officer, said arrangements were made to properly house langurs . They will soon be returned to their natural habitat under judicial oversight, which at least gives some relief after such ugly treatment.
But tbh,the suspected route is what makes this feel bigger than just one local gang . Authorities believe traffickers planned to take golden langurs from Assam to West Bengal and then push them toward international markets . That means there may be more people sitting behind scenes, not even touching animals directly .
And then there is another related incident from June 17, 2026 . A 24-year-old woman from Bangladesh was detained at Lokapriya Gopinath Bordoloi International Airport in Guwahati after allegedly using forged Aadhaar card . She was also suspected of entering India illegally .
Now when wildlife trafficking, illegal border crossing and possible international players all start appearing in same region,it becomes uncomfortable to ignore pattern . Question is,how many such movements are already happening quietly before police catch one batch…
