So some pretty big news coming from Scotland which nobody was expecting ah . The Scottish Conservatives have won a by-election in Aberdeen South for the first time since 1973 . That is a very, very long time .
And this wasn't even close fight. Their candidate,Douglas Lumsden, beat the SNP's Richard Thomson by more than 6,000 votes. People are saying this is a huge message to both Labour and the SNP about what voters are thinking rn .
Kemi Badenoch, the party leader, sounded very happy about this whole thing . She said, "Aberdeen has sent message that we will not be ignored," which is clearly a reference to oil and gas industry in that area.
This by-election only happened because the old SNP MP,Stephen Flynn, resigned after he moved to Holyrood . So it was his seat that was up for grabs.
But it wasn't a total loss for the SNP . They did manage to win in another by-election happening at same time in Arbroath and Broughty Ferry, where Lara Bird held seat for them. So mixed results for them.
Few things standing out from this situation:
- Badenoch is saying this win sends clear message about economic priorities of Scottish voters.
- Lumsden has been talking a lot about protecting oil and gas industry because people are unhappy .
- Even SNP's John Swinney has admitted they lost and need to do some thinking within the party.
And honestly, this feels like a big warning shot . Conservatives are definitely using this to say they can challenge Labour's leadership more directly, especially on issues like national and energy security.
It seems like people in Aberdeen are really worried about their jobs and the economy . They voted for the party they think will protect their main industry, which is oil and gas. Simple as that.
Now that Lumsden is going to Westminster,he has to resign from his Holyrood seat because of dual mandate ban . So another Conservative will just take his place there.
This whole result really shakes things up though . It makes you wonder if this is just a one-off thing because of local issues,or if the political mood in Scotland is starting to change in a bigger way…
