So another classic song is getting remake and honestly,I'm not even surprised anymore . This time it's iconic 'Chunnari Chunnari' from Biwi No.1 and people are obviously not happy about it.
The musician IP Singh is behind this new version for some upcoming film called Hai Jawani Toh Ishq Hona Hai . And he recently had to address all the criticism from fans who think some songs should just be left alone.
But Singh is defending his work, saying that redoing old songs is a long-standing tradition in music industry . He said,“Actually, you know,we usually pay homage or reimagine songs that were iconic in their time.” He even gave examples of artists like Drake and Limp Bizkit doing same thing globally.
His whole point is that it's not about replacing original, but about introducing it to new generation.
And tbh,I can see his point to some extent.
Basically his argument breaks down into few key ideas:
- Tribute to classic music — Singh views his work as an homage to iconic songs.
- Commercial viability — reimagined tracks are often safer bets for artists.
- Artistic expression — reinterpretation is a valid form of creativity in music.
When he was asked about the decision to remake such a loved song,he said he was just excited about the project . He mentioned,“We were just really, really excited when we got opportunity... All these thoughts really never came to our mind.” It seems backlash was not something they were thinking about at all.
And he also made one interesting point about his own childhood . He said,“When we were growing up,there were so many re-imaginations... we don’t think that we would have been exposed to them if they were not presented to us.” This reinforces his idea that remakes can help old music find new listeners.
But still, the feeling is very mixed ah . On one hand, yes,it’s a way to keep old melodies alive . But on other hand,so many of these remakes just lose the original magic completely . They add some generic beat and call it a day . It feels less like homage and more like just a shortcut for a hit song.
So where do you even draw the line between a tribute and just cashing in on nostalgia… I really don't know…
