International Yoga Day 2026 is again bringing yoga into discussion, but honestly, this part about pregnant women feels more needed than usual . Because still many families believe pregnancy means woman should stop every kind of physical activity and just “take rest” all day.
But doctors are saying something more balanced . Not heavy workout, not risky moves, but gentle exercise under right guidance can actually help both mother and baby . And that is where prenatal yoga comes in.
Dr. Archana Dhawan Bajaj,a renowned gynecologist and obstetrician at Nurture IVF Clinic, says yoga can be useful during pregnancy if done safely and with proper supervision . According to her, prenatal yoga may help with increased flexibility, reduced back pain, better posture and lower stress levels.
And honestly, back pain and stress during pregnancy are not small thing ah . Sleep also becomes difficult for many women,so if yoga improves sleep quality and helps body prepare for labor through breathing and relaxation, that sounds genuinely helpful.
But at same time, this is not something to copy from random online video and start doing at home . Dr. Bajaj clearly warns,"Not all poses are suitable for every stage of pregnancy," and that line matters because body changes a lot in every trimester.
Few things pregnant women should keep in mind:
- Consult your doctor first, especially if pregnancy is high-risk .
- Opt for prenatal yoga classes because they are made for safety and comfort.
- Avoid lying on your back for extended periods and intense abdominal exercises after first trimester.
She also says every pregnancy experience is different . So if woman notices vaginal bleeding, dizziness,or severe headaches, she should stop yoga and consult healthcare provider immediately . No pushing through pain,no “it will be fine” attitude.
Dr. Bajaj puts it clearly,"Yoga, when practiced correctly, is an excellent option for a healthy pregnancy. The key lies in selecting the right style, adapting the practice to one's needs, and seeking expert advice when necessary."
And tbh, this is bigger than just burning calories or doing some trendy wellness routine . For pregnant women, yoga can support body and mind, but only when done carefully, stage by stage, with doctor’s advice… because one wrong assumption during pregnancy can change whole picture…
