This Strait of Hormuz update honestly feels like one of those quiet shipping news stories which actually matters a lot more than it looks at first . Three Indian-flagged oil tankers passing through safely is not small thing ah,especially after recent tension in that route .
On June 20,2026,three vessels named Desh Vaibhav,Desh Vibhor, and Sanmar Herald successfully crossed strategically sensitive Strait of Hormuz . Union Minister Sarbananda Sonowal confirmed that these tankers are carrying more than 8.6 lakh million tonnes of crude oil, with total of 94 crew members onboard.
And these are not just random ships moving around. Desh Vaibhav is expected at Vadinar Port on June 24,while Desh Vibhor is also reaching Sikka Port on same day only . Sanmar Herald is expected to arrive at Paradip by July 1 .
Few things standing out here:
- 3 Indian-flagged crude oil tankers crossed Strait of Hormuz safely.
- Desh Vaibhav,Desh Vibhor, and Sanmar Herald are carrying more than 8.6 lakh million tonnes of crude oil.
- 94 crew members are onboard, with arrivals expected between June 24 and July 1.
Minister Sarbananda Sonowal also posted on X,"3 Indian-flagged crude oil tankers,Desh Vaibhav, Desh Vibhor and Sanmar Herald carrying over 8.6 Lakh MT of cargo with 94 Indian crew members have successfully transited the Strait of Hormuz today and are en route to India." That one line explains why government is clearly trying to reassure people about safety of Indian maritime routes.
And tbh,the bigger backdrop is more serious than ship movement itself . Strait of Hormuz has always been one of those pressure points for global oil supply, and whenever tension rises there, countries like India start watching very closely because energy security gets affected directly.
This movement also comes after United States recently eased sanctions on Iran, allowing oil tankers to move through Strait more freely again . Reports say this followed tentative agreement between U.S . and Iran to reduce hostilities which had earlier made Strait largely unusable.
President Donald Trump signed an agreement that allows Iran to sell its oil freely, and that has changed mood around shipping in region for now . But still, when such heavily watched route becomes usable again, question is always same… how long will calm actually hold this time…
