France is going through really scary heatwave right now,and honestly,49 out of 96 regions being put under red heat alert is not small thing ah . This is not just uncomfortable summer weather anymore,it is becoming serious public health situation.
Temperatures are expected to cross 40°C (104°F) in many areas, and Bordeaux may touch staggering 43°C . Météo-France has said this intense heat is expected to continue throughout week, which means around 63 million people could be affected across France .
And this is coming after already very uncomfortable weekend where temperatures reached 40°C . When heat stays this high for days together, bodies do not get proper time to recover, especially elderly people, children and those with health issues .
Situation has already turned tragic in Gironde region, where reports say three elderly individuals aged between 80 and 95 died due to heat-related issues . That part really hits hard because these are exactly people who need checking on during such weather .
Few things standing out clearly right now:
- Stéphanie Rist urged citizens to monitor vulnerable relatives and neighbors.
- Around 845 schools closed for the day, while 1,800 students were allowed to leave early .
- SNCF advised vulnerable individuals to avoid train travel, and service reductions were reported in Paris.
Authorities also imposed alcohol ban during annual Fête de la Musique, which is usually full of street performances and large gatherings . And tbh,it makes sense because alcohol, huge crowds and 40°C type heat can become dangerous very fast.
SNCF has asked vulnerable people to postpone travel plans during this heatwave, and some train lines in Paris have reduced services because of extreme temperatures . Belgium's train operator also announced cancellations for peak hour trains on both Monday and Tuesday,so this is clearly not just one city struggling.
Across Europe also,record-breaking temperatures are being expected . Madrid may reach 39°C and Rome is forecasted to hit 37°C,which again shows how these extreme heat events are becoming more frequent and more harsh .
And at same time, there is that bigger uncomfortable question sitting behind all this . If this is how one week of heat can disrupt schools, trains, festivals and even take lives, what happens when such summers become normal only…
