EasyJet saying no to £4.74 billion takeover offer from American investment firm Castlelake is quite interesting because this is not small amount ah . But airline board has still rejected it and even called bid "highly opportunistic."
And honestly, that one phrase tells you mood inside company . EasyJet clearly does not want this to look like serious rescue or friendly support move . Board is basically saying offer does not match its own plans and company wants to stay independent .
Castlelake already has around 2.14% stake in EasyJet,so this is not some random outside noise also . Firm has now gone public with latest offer, which looks like direct attempt to make shareholders think about it seriously, even after board said no.
According to Castlelake,it approached EasyJet with three proposals this month and all three were rejected . Latest one is 625p per share, which is 24% premium compared to EasyJet's closing price last Friday . On paper, that sounds attractive, but board clearly feels there is bigger picture here.
Few things standing out in this offer:
- Castlelake proposed structure to keep EasyJet majority-owned by EU citizens.
- US firm says it wants to make EasyJet stronger in European airline market.
- Castlelake must submit formal bid by this Friday or withdraw interest.
And tbh, this is where tension becomes obvious . Castlelake is talking about value, resilience and operational strength, while EasyJet is talking about independence and long-term strategy . Same deal, but both sides are selling completely different story.
For shareholders, this may become tricky question . Take premium now,or trust current leadership to build more value later? In airline business, that is never simple because fuel costs, travel demand, competition and regulation can change mood very fast .
But EasyJet leadership seems firm rn . They believe autonomy matters more than quick takeover money, and maybe they also don’t want outside investor deciding future direction of airline only because market timing looks favourable.
Now everything depends on what Castlelake does before this Friday . Will it come with formal bid,or step back after public pressure attempt… that is where things are still hanging.
