This whole United States-Iran negotiation update sounds hopeful on paper,but honestly,situation around Lebanon is still looking very tense . First round of talks has ended,mediators from Qatar and Pakistan are saying notable progress happened,but ground reality is not suddenly peaceful ah.
According to joint statement released early on June 22,a 'High Level Committee' has now made roadmap for final agreement within next 60 days . That sounds big,because conflict in Lebanon has already dragged into very dangerous space.
Iran's Foreign Minister Seyed Abbas Araghchi also sounded positive,saying significant strides have been made towards concluding hostilities in Lebanon . But at same time,statements and real violence are moving in two different directions only .
Recent memorandum of understanding includes commitments to stop fighting on all fronts . It also talks about reopening Strait of Hormuz,which is major shipping route for global oil and gas . So this is not just regional issue,oil markets and global trade also get pulled into it.
Few things standing out clearly here:
- Roadmap established for final deal,aiming for resolution within 60 days.
- Key commitments include ending hostilities,targeting all fronts,particularly Lebanon.
- Creation of a 'de-confliction cell' to prevent military escalations between US,Iran,and Lebanon.
And tbh,this 'de-confliction cell' part shows how nervous everyone still is . Because one misunderstanding,one strike,one wrong military move can push whole thing back into serious escalation .
Despite positive talk,violence between Hezbollah and Israeli forces in southern Lebanon has reportedly escalated again . After signing of MoU,clashes still caused numerous casualties,and Israeli airstrikes reportedly led to significant loss of life among civilians . That is where optimism starts feeling very fragile.
Humanitarian situation is also getting worse while diplomatic meetings are happening in Switzerland . Calls for ceasefire are becoming more urgent,but people stuck in conflict zones cannot survive on roadmap language and future promises.
US Vice-President JD Vance said Iran must abandon its role as a 'driver of regional instability' if it wants transformative relationship with US . This negotiation approach is clearly trying to open bigger deal,but Iran's nuclear program is still sitting on table for future discussions.
Both sides have agreed to keep communication channels open so misunderstandings do not threaten commercial navigation through Strait of Hormuz . But when fighting is still happening in Lebanon,question is simple only… can this roadmap survive next 60 days?
