This International Day of Yoga news honestly felt like one of those moments where India’s soft power is visible without too much noise . On June 21, 2026 ,External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar joined 12th annual International Day of Yoga event at Nehru Park in New Delhi, and crowd presence there was not small thing ah.
He participated in yoga session alongside Norway's Ambassador to India,May-Elin Stener . And that itself says something, because yoga is no longer just seen as Indian tradition happening inside India . It has become one common health language for many countries now.
The event drew large crowds, with focus again on physical and mental well-being . S. Jaishankar’s participation also connected with what Prime Minister Narendra Modi has been saying for years now, that yoga should become part of daily life, not just one-day photo event.
And at same time,PM Modi led massive gathering in Kolkata, where he performed various yoga asanas . Message was simple only, yoga can cross cultural boundaries and bring people together without needing too much explanation.
This year’s theme,'Yoga for Healthy Ageing' ,also feels quite relevant . Because everywhere now, people are talking about ageing populations,stress,lifestyle-related health issues and how to stay healthier for longer time . Yoga fits into that discussion naturally.
Few things standing out from celebrations:
- Global Participation — Yoga events were held worldwide, showcasing its universal appeal.
- UN Acknowledgment — António Guterres praised yoga for its role in promoting health and mindfulness.
- India's Diplomatic Engagement — Indian embassies worldwide hosted yoga events, enhancing cultural diplomacy.
In message shared on social media,UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres acknowledged yoga's deep roots in India and its evolution into a global phenomenon . He also spoke about yoga’s ability to build mindfulness and community, and urged people to extend care to elderly and promote healthy living across generations.
And celebrations were not limited to India only . Indian embassies around world held yoga sessions and educational activities. Embassy of India in Japan highlighted how yoga supports mind-body harmony, while Consulate General of India in Shanghai hosted vibrant event at Bund, symbolizing historical ties between India and China.
Honestly, this is where yoga becomes more than exercise . It becomes diplomacy, culture, health message and community activity all mixed together . But question is,after one big global day ends, how many people actually carry it into daily life…
