Delhi getting its first police station only for crimes against women and children on June 19,2026 does feel like big step, but also it says something uncomfortable about how serious safety situation has become in capital .
Lieutenant-Governor Taranjit Singh Sandhu officially opened facility in Subzi Mandi . This police station will look into cases like domestic violence, sexual assault and harassment, basically matters where complainants often need more sensitivity than usual police setup gives.
And honestly, this part matters most . If woman or child already comes after trauma, then cold environment, too many questions,or fear of judgment can make them step back completely.
Sandhu also said something which actually makes sense here . Success of this police station should not be measured merely by number of cases processed, but by level of confidence it instills in women and girls . That is real test only,no?
Niharika Bhatt,Additional Deputy Commissioner of Police (North),said nearly 60% of staff are women . This includes key posts like Station House Officer and Assistant Commissioner of Police, which is not small thing ah when complainants may feel more comfortable speaking to women officers.
Few things standing out in this new setup:
- Specialized training for personnel — Officers have undergone training to sensitively handle cases.
- Child-friendly facilities — Station includes dedicated space for children accompanying complainants .
- Community outreach programs — Initiatives will promote awareness of women's rights and legal protections.
But this police station is not just about investigation . It is also supposed to run awareness programs and community outreach so people understand women's rights and available legal remedies . Because many times victims don't even know where to go,what to ask,or whether complaint will be taken seriously.
Devesh Srivastava,Special Commissioner of Police (Law and Order),also mentioned that North district has started programs like 'Rani Jhansi Squad' and 'Vamika' bike patrols . Idea is to make women personnel more visible in policing roles, and that visibility can change public comfort level slowly.
Delhi Police has also set up 116 Pink Booths and all-woman PCR vans as part of this safety push . On paper,it looks like system is trying to become more approachable for women and children.
Still, real question is not just whether building is friendly or staff is trained . Question is whether scared victims will actually trust system enough to walk in and speak…
