This Nathan Bennett case from Bristol is honestly hard to read without feeling angry . A nursery worker at Partou King Street Nursery has been convicted and sentenced to 30 years in prison for sexually abusing five boys aged just two and three, and whole thing is even more disturbing because warning signs were allegedly there for months.
And this is not some small complaint ah . Former employee Bessie Martin said she had raised concerns about Bennett’s behaviour, including holding children for extended periods and taking them away from CCTV view . That alone should have triggered serious alarm inside any nursery.
But according to her, nursery management dismissed concerns and suggested she was just "imagining it" . That line feels especially chilling now, because when someone working inside system is saying something feels wrong, brushing it aside can have horrible consequences.
Only after Bessie Martin escalated grievances through whistleblowing report,Bennett was temporarily suspended . But then he was allowed to return shortly after . And tbh, this is where case starts looking less like one person’s crime and more like safeguarding failure around him.
Few things standing out clearly in this case:
- Nathan Bennett was sentenced to 30 years in prison for sexually abusing five boys aged just two and three.
- Government has announced 3,000 additional unannounced inspections each year after case .
- Ofsted is increasing inspection frequency for Partou and other nursery chains following revelations .
Partou has now said it will improve safeguarding governance and oversight after investigation . But for parents, that kind of response will obviously feel late, because damage has already happened and trust is not something that comes back easily .
The nursery closed last December, but Partou is still one of largest nursery providers in England with over 100 sites . Reports also say fallout from Bennett’s abuse has led to rise in official notices to improve safeguarding practices across branches .
And this is not limited to Partou only . Bright Horizons has also faced increased scrutiny after similar incident, which makes whole situation feel wider than one nursery or one worker . Parents are now left wondering how much they can actually rely on checks that are supposed to protect small children.
Government moving ahead with more inspections may help, but inspections after tragedy always feel like reaction after worst has already happened . Real question is what happens when someone raises alarm early, and whether management actually listens next time…
