Seeing someone bring that same Carnatic music energy into Chennai in June is slightly unexpected, but in nice way.
The inaugural Mid-Year Margazhi event is scheduled from June 19 to 21 in Chennai, and main focus is Carnatic music,a genre so deeply tied to Indian tradition . Not every cultural event needs to be loud or flashy,ah. Sometimes one good concert and one thoughtful talk can do enough.
Aavaranaa is also trying to connect this with Kanchipuram, which is located just two hours from Chennai and is known for rich artistic heritage and exquisite silk weaving . That link makes sense because brand itself is tied to textiles, craftsmanship and stories around artisans.
Vijayalakshmi Krishna seems to be looking at this as more than just music event . She said,"Our brand has always been about promoting craftsmanship and the artisans who create these beautiful pieces," and that line pretty much explains direction.
Event schedule is simple, but quite packed:
- Brindha Manickavasakan performs — kicking off the festival on June 19 at 4:30 PM.
- Chitra Madhavan speaks — discussing Kanchipuram’s cultural history on June 20 at 11 AM.
- Rithvik Raja concludes — with a concert on June 21 at 11 AM.
And tbh,Chitra Madhavan talking about Kanchipuram's architectural marvels in middle of music festival is nice touch . Because Kanchipuram is not just silk sarees or temple photos,it has layered cultural history which people sometimes casually ignore.
What I find good here is that Aavaranaa is not keeping textiles and performance as two separate worlds . They are trying to bridge traditional textile arts with contemporary performances, and if done sincerely,it can create good space for local artists also .
Vijayalakshmi hopes Mid-Year Margazhi will inspire more events at Aavaranaa and create vibrant space for emerging talents in music industry . She is also stressing on maintaining connections with local artisans,so brand continues to support and showcase their work.
Entry is free, but registration is mandatory . People interested can connect through Instagram @aavaranaa or WhatsApp at 8939300020 .
But now real question is whether Chennai audience will actually respond to Margazhi feeling outside usual season . If this works, maybe it opens door for many such smaller, warmer cultural evenings…
