Something quite interesting is now happening in Maharashtra politics where Supriya Sule of Nationalist Congress Party (Sharadchandra Pawar) has signaled conditional support for Union government's proposed delimitation bill . And honestly, the condition she has put forward is not small thing at all.
On July 15,Sule clarified that her party would consider supporting legislation only if it includes mandatory 50% increase in Lok Sabha seats across all states . That one condition is basically changing entire tone of conversation around this bill .
The background here matters . Constitution (One Hundred and Thirty First Amendment) Bill,2026 had already failed earlier . It could only manage 298 votes in favor, well short of required two-thirds majority . Now Union government is reportedly preparing to re-introduce same bill, and this time it comes linked with implementation of 33% women's reservation tied directly to delimitation process .
And this is where political calculation becomes genuinely complicated.
Sule mentioned that NCP-SP would first discuss matter within INDIA bloc before making final decision . She also made clear that interests of public remain paramount . So it is not full support yet, more like open door with conditions attached .
Few key facts that explain what exactly is at stake here:
- Uniform seat expansion — NCP-SP demands written guarantee for proportional 50% rise in seats for every state to ensure fairness .
- Legislative threshold — ruling NDA requires at least 360 votes in Lok Sabha to pass constitutional amendment successfully.
- Redrawing boundaries — proposed bill seeks to use 2011 census data to increase total number of lower house seats from 550 to 850 .
Now separately, speculation about political realignment has also intensified after meeting between Jayant Patil and Deputy Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis . Nobody is officially saying much, but that meeting alone has set off lot of discussion about which way NCP-SP might eventually lean.
Union Home Minister Amit Shah had earlier suggested government was open to including seat increase assurances directly in text of bill . This seems to be deliberate attempt to pull skeptical parties like DMK and Samajwadi Party into support column . And apparently NCP-SP is also being factored into that same calculation.
Arithmetic of Lok Sabha has also shifted recently in ways that matter here . Approximately 20 members from Trinamool Congress have moved toward Nationalist Citizens Party of India, while Shiv Sena (UBT) has seen defections going to ruling Shiv Sena . Even with these gains though,BJP-led coalition is still searching for broader consensus to avoid another embarrassing defeat on floor.
Sule has been clear that concrete, written definitions for constituency redrawing are essential for any future cooperation from her party . Verbal assurances are not going to be enough this time.
Honestly, whole situation feels like one very careful game where everyone is testing limits before committing . NCP-SP does not want to appear like they simply folded under pressure, but at same time they also cannot ignore potential benefits of seat expansion for states like Maharashtra… And whether INDIA bloc stays united on this or quietly fractures under individual state interests is question that has no clear answer right now
