Just saw this news coming out of Ecuador and honestly,it's just so shocking . A suspected gang leader shot dead in broad daylight,right outside an international airport in Guayaquil .
The victim was Carlos Alberto Suástegui Villanueva,a 39-year-old man . And he wasn't just anybody,police say he was a leader of one major gang. The attack happened the moment he was leaving José Joaquín de Olmedo International Airport.
But the way it happened is what's really disturbing . Security footage showed two young men approaching him,and they were holding stuffed toys and flowers,posing like they were waiting for someone . Then one of them just pulled out a gun and shot him at close range .
Imagine the scene ah . Eyewitnesses said it was total chaos,passengers just running everywhere in panic as shots were fired . At airport,of all places .
And tbh,this is where things get really uncomfortable. This kind of open violence in public space shows how bad the situation is getting there .
Few things standing out clearly in this case:
- Suástegui was identified as the leader of the notorious Los Águilas gang.
- President Noboa has declared a fresh state of emergency in 10 provinces because of this rising violence.
- This whole incident is part of a bigger surge in crime,especially in Guayaquil.
Authorities have arrested two teenagers for ambush . Teenagers only . This just highlights another scary problem,the involvement of young people in these big organized crime groups. This particular gang,Los Águilas,was even designated a terrorist organization by President Daniel Noboa in 2024.
And this violence is not happening in a vacuum . Ecuador is stuck between Colombia and Peru,the world’s biggest coca producers,so drug trafficking and extortion are huge issues for long time . The country's murder rate even hit record high in 2025.
The government is trying to fight back . President Noboa brought in emergency measures to give security forces more power to handle the violence . But how effective these things are is big question rn.
When something this brutal can happen in front of everyone at an airport,you have to wonder about the safety of ordinary people . How is anyone supposed to feel secure…
