France is really going through rough summer moment rn,with intense heatwave pushing authorities to issue red heat alerts for 49 of its 96 regions . And honestly, when temperature is expected to cross 40°C (104°F) in parts of western France, this is not normal discomfort only.
In Bordeaux, forecasts are going up to 42°C,which is just brutal ah . At that level, even daily routine becomes difficult, forget school exams, travel and outdoor work .
Because of these extreme conditions, approximately 845 schools have closed, while another 1,800 have gone for early dismissals for students,as reported by Ministry of Education . That itself shows how serious authorities are taking this heat.
But at same time, over a million high school students are still scheduled to take their oral final exams for baccalaureate in this weather . And this is where many people are worried, because sitting for exams under soaring temperatures is not small thing .
Few things standing out clearly here:
- Red heat alerts issued for 49 of its 96 regions.
- Approximately 845 schools closed and 1,800 opted for early dismissals .
- 13 drowning incidents were reported after people tried seeking relief in water.
Government has also warned people not to rush into unsupervised lakes and rivers for cooling down . After weekend saw 13 drowning incidents, this warning makes sense, but it also shows how desperate people are becoming because of heat.
Across France, many regions are under orange alerts too,and around 63 million people are experiencing effects of this heatwave . SNCF has advised vulnerable individuals to postpone travel, while in Paris, several train lines have reduced operations due to extreme temperatures.
Transport issue is spreading outside France also, with Belgium bracing for record heat levels and similar disruptions expected in train services . Hot air moving north from Sahara Desert is said to be driving this heatwave, and it is expected to be one of longest in recent years.
Météo-France said that of 51 heatwaves recorded in France since 1947,34 have occurred since 2000 . That number feels scary because it is not just one bad week,it looks like pattern becoming more regular .
Health Minister Stéphanie Rist has asked citizens to check on neighbors and relatives, especially vulnerable people . Government has also put bans on outdoor events organized by state agencies so emergency services can focus on those who need help most.
And honestly, when schools, exams, trains, health warnings and drowning risks all come together in one heatwave,it starts feeling like country is not just facing hot weather, but something much bigger building slowly…
